A Historic Find in New Jersey's Wharton Forest

Batsto Mansion

Batsto Village:
A historic village
tucked in the
New Jersey Pinelands
along the Batsto River
was the one time site
of an active iron works community.

Batsto Mansion

The initial iron works company
was established in 1766,
and the village grew
over the next 100 years.

The Gristmill

Eventually iron works gave way to glass works.
After the decline of the glass business
Joseph Wharton bought the property in 1876,
modernized the mills
and began growing cranberries, peanuts and hay.
Wharton was interested in forestry
and today the surrounding state forest bears his name.

Barn Reflection

In present times the property is owned by the state of New Jersey
and is open to the public as a historic site.
It boasts 40+ historic structures on the property.
