Small Town Surprise: Hamburg, PA

I love this small Americana town:
Hamburg, PA
Named by Pennsylvania Germans after Hamburg, Germany.

This Berks County small town is big on charm.
It has a historic district of over 400 buildings!
That's a lot of charm.

There's also railroad charm at the
Reading Railroad Heritage Museum
which is sure to please the railroad buff.

But the most charming spot I found was the
Adams and Bright Drug Store c.1902
which installed a soda fountain in 1927.

This Adams and Bright Drug Store retains so much of the old time feel
with valuable shelf space
reserved for antique pharmaceutical paraphernalia.

Other shelves are lined with candies,
small gifts, toys and sundries.
I just loved it there.

In the very back you can get your
modern day prescriptions filled.
Why in the world would you go to
CVS or Walgreens?

While there, I didn't have a fountain soda,
but I did have Heisler's ice cream
in a waffle cone.
Yum.
(Due to Covid, there is no indoor seating, 12/20.)

This town is uniquely located
near Cabella's, Yuengling Brewery,
the Appalachian Trail, the Schuylkill River
and lots of state game lands
near the Pocono foothills.
So there are lots of outdoor activities nearby.

Get yourself to Hamburg and visit the Adams and Bright Drug Store
for a fountain soda.

There's A Hoosier in the Odyssey

Thanks to Bon Ami the enamel top looks great.

"A what?" I asked.
"A hoosier" he answered.

Hoosier is a type of cupboard popular in the first decades of the 20th century.

He then proceeded to tell me all about it.
I could tell, he was sold...obviously.
Help, I've inherited a Hoosier.

All things tea and coffee are stored in the top.

I really didn't want a Hoosier...
but he always puts up with the things I bring home so I needed to come up with a plan.

The calendar hangs nicely from a wire I strung inside.
From the other inside door hangs coupons and the like.

He's the one that is always saying
we need to stop accumulating and think about downsizing.
And here he is with a Hoosier in the Odyssey.

"Can you help me bring it in?" he asked.
"Alright."I responded trying to keep my composure.

Vintage Dust Collectors

Now, 7 cans of spray paint later,
here it is in the kitchen.

It looks like the family likes the chalkboard panels I
added with chalkboard paint. *Note to self....get dustless chalk.

He thinks it's great.

This is my husband's mother as a child
in front of a different Hoosier.

It seems so small to me...
were people that much shorter 100 years ago?

It's In the Details

www.rebeccahaegelephotography.com
Washington House, Yellow Springs, PA

Every where I go I notice the details.

Lemon Hill, Fairmount Park, PA

That is why I just love architectural elements.

Woodford Mansion, Fairmount Park, PA

Sit me in an old structure and I am happy just taking it all in.

30th Street Station, Philadelphia, PA

Take me to an architectural salvage shop
and my heart sings.

Mattison Castle, Ambler, PA

It's a cheap date - that salvage shop.

Smithville Park, New Jersey

Until I decide that a salvaged mantle
would look so much better over our fireplace
 than our 1970s version.
I think it's time to tell my husband I need a cheap date
cause that mantle is starting to bug me.

That cheap date just got expensive.
Shhhh...he doesn't need to know yet.
