Party With A Purpose

Each year the American Red Cross
hosts a fundraising Red Ball
in Philadelphia.

The proceeds benefit The Red Cross House - Center for Disaster Recovery.

It is a fun night of music, dancing, entertainment and food...with a purpose.

This year I was asked to help photograph the gala.

It was tons of work,
but tons of fun too.

I certainly hope I  am
asked again next year.
The Red Cross Red Ball
is a
Party with a Purpose.

March is Red Cross Month -
you can get involved by
Giving Blood
Donating Funds
Volunteering
or
Taking a CPR Class.

9th St. Italian Market Festival, Philadelphia

Things were really hopping today at the
Italian Market in Philadelphia!
They held their annual street festival.
It was advertised as an
"Epic Food Festival Alert"

so of course I could get my family to go along.

Once you find a place to park
make your way to the heart of the festival
on S. 9th Street.
We visit the deli's early before the long lines later.
Then pack your food in a cooler in your car.

Next enjoy the sights on the street
because it will get crowded later.

The food will soon be too tempting to resist.
And the great thing about going with other people
is that you can buy just about one of every edible thing
and share it.

That way you get to taste everything
without getting full.

And if you still haven't had enough....
or if you have never been to Philly,
then you MUST stop down the street at Pat's or Geno's
for a real Philly style cheese steak.

Oh yes,
it is worth the wait!
But the line moves faster than you think,
unless some tourist slows things down.  ;)

In Philly speak I order mine...
"One. Provolone. Without."
It's a Philly thing.
And you really should know it before you order.

All of my photos from this event are here.
This event takes place on Sunday as well.

Cherry Blossoms Philly Style

This is the first year I attended
Sakura Sunday at the
Philadelphia Cherry Blossom Festival
in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia.

One of the secrets
is to get there early!

After I arrived
I went directly to the
Shofuso Japanese House and Garden
and was able to catch an immediate tour.

Later in the day
lines for tours will be long
and possibly even sold out.

Next I went right over to
the Tamagawa University Taiko Drum and Dance Group
and managed to get a front row seat!

This is truly the highlight of the event
and not to be missed.

Students from Tamagawa University
perform brilliantly
in both Taiko drumming and dance.

I wish I could capture the
sound of the drums
in these photos....

....or the choreography of the dance!

After their program
I meandered around catching
some of the other presentations.

Harajuku Fashion Show

Doshinkan Karate

Shokotan Karate

Shinshin Warrior

All of this perfectly timed
with spring blossoms
made for a gorgeous day.

By arriving early,
two-three hours was enough to tour the Tea House
enjoy the Tamagawa University Taiko Drum and Dance
and see a few other demonstrations.

I stayed all day
but really didn't feel there was a need to
as after seeing the
Tamagawa University Taiko Drum and Dance
you've seen the highlight event.

In the future
you should know you can also catch the
Tamagawa University Taiko Drum and Dance
at other festivities around the city
during the month the festival runs.
Many times without the crowds
and at no cost to you.

Lady in Blue

I went to anAmerican Civil War encampment
at Graeme Park in Horsham, PA
I had never visited there before
and was able to take advantage of a
tour of the Keith House.

One of the reeactors was this lovely lady
dressed in blue.
Her dress is Civil War era.

Although the house is steeped in
Revolutionary War era history
it did exist and house a family
through the Civil War as well.

The history surrounding Keith House
is fascinating
and I will post on that
in the near future.

Seeing our Lady in Blue there
gave you the feel of a glimpse
back in time.

The complete photo gallery is here.

If you go...
We had a wonderful tour by a
very knowledgeable high school senior.
The grounds are free and
Keith House tours are only $5.
If you live nearby, please stop in!
These historic places
have suffered severe budget cuts
and need our help to survive
through the current economy.

Winterfest, Jim Thorpe, PA

Jim Thorpe has absolutely nothing to do
with the town in Pennsylvania bearing his name.
The officials of Mauch Chunk,
or 'Bear Mountain' in the language of the Lenape people,
purchased the name from Jim Thorpe's wife after his death
in an effort to up tourism in the town.

This Victorian era small town is certainly picturesque.
Surrounded by small mountains
and beautiful structures,
it makes a nice day trip from Philly.

The Winterfest activity is primarily focused on the Mug Walk.
An ingenious marketing idea that gets you into
every participating store in town.

You purchase your mug at the Visitor Center by the old railroad station.
By visiting the participating stores,
you receive a little something for your mug:
Soup, chili, hot chocolate, crackers, cookies, popcorn, candy, etc.
not actually served in the mug though.

It is a great way to get reluctant husbands into the quaint shops
they would otherwise never wish to frequent.

In addition to the Mug walk
there was an industrious chain saw wood carver at work.

And a not as industrious ice carver.

Street musicians whose sounds echoed  up the street.

And a few other things taking place throughout the town.
I will be posting about the Civil War rein-actors
and a tour of Harry Packer's mansion
in the next couple of days.

For now, I'll enjoy some hot chocolate in my
new Jim Thorpe mug.  :)

To visit the town, there is plenty of parking at the railroad station
for a reasonable fee.
