Pennsylvania - The state where I have lived my whole life.
Named for William Penn, its founder,
the name means, Penn's Woods.

William Penn grew up the son of a wealthy Admiral in the British navy.
On a visit to Ireland,
he heard a Quaker preacher
and adopted the teachings as his belief system.

Penn was a staunch Quaker
and faced persecution and jail time for his beliefs.
He also gave a lot of his inherited wealth to support Quakerism.

King Charles II of England
repaid a large debt to Penn in the form of Land.
Land in the colonies.
Penn's goal was to start a colony that represented his beliefs.

The city of Philadelphia was planned by Penn
as was this home.

But Penn spent very little time here -
only 4 years in the colonies and a fraction of that time in his Manor.

Penn died in 1718 in England owing much debt.
But today, Penn's legacy lives on in Pennsylvania.

What a gorgeous place! I love reenactment sites!
I always adore your history lessons, and it works, I want to visit these places.
I looked at all the photos and the one that made me laugh is the reenactor on his cell phone. your people shots are wonderful. my favorite for me is the lady petting the cow.. and that fire place is awesome but not if I had to cook in it....would love to visit this place. and taste what the ladies were cooking
Love your kitchen reenactors - you caught them enjoying the heck out of their job. And Penn's home - beautiful.
