Three Lenses at Chanticleer Gardens

What a great day for National Public Garden's Day -
Cloud cover diffused the light beautifully eliminating harsh shadows.

I used my Canon 7D -
which is my typical walk around camera.
I used three different lenses today.

I started with the Canon EF 8-15 mm, F4L, Fisheye.

CAMERACanon EOS 7D
ISO800
FOCAL LENGTH15.0 mm (23.6 mm in 35mm)
APERTUREf/8
EXPOSURE TIME0.00063s (1/1600)

Before you run out and buy a fisheye lens...don't.
A fisheye lens is more of a toy.

CAMERACanon EOS 7D
ISO800
FOCAL LENGTH15.0 mm (23.6 mm in 35mm)
APERTUREf/8
EXPOSURE TIME0.00156s (1/640)

If you already have a collection of lenses
and money burning a hole in your pocket then
by all means go ahead and get one.

Probably my favorite shot of the day. Sigh.
CAMERACanon EOS 7D
LENSCanon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM
ISO800
FOCAL LENGTH8.0 mm (12.6 mm in 35mm)
APERTUREf/14
EXPOSURE TIME0.0005s (1/2000)

Otherwise spend your time learning your camera inside out first.
Then buy something more practical.
Once you buy one, a fisheye will not be on your camera often.

CAMERACanon EOS 7D
LENSCanon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM
ISO800
FOCAL LENGTH15.0 mm (23.6 mm in 35mm)
APERTUREf/14
EXPOSURE TIME0.0025s (1/400)

Next I changed lenses to the Canon EF 100mm F 2.8L Macro

CAMERACanon EOS 7D
LENSCanon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM
ISO800
FOCAL LENGTH100.0 mm (157.0 mm in 35mm)
APERTUREf/8
EXPOSURE TIME0.0125s (1/80)

Again, I don't recommend running out and getting a Macro lens either.
Although this lens is more practical than a fisheye.

CAMERACanon EOS 7D
ISO800
FOCAL LENGTH100.0 mm (158.0 mm in 35mm)
APERTUREf/5.6
EXPOSURE TIME0.00313s (1/320)

You don't HAVE to use this lens as a macro.

CAMERACanon EOS 7D
LENSCanon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM
ISO800
FOCAL LENGTH100.0 mm (157.0 mm in 35mm)
APERTUREf/5
EXPOSURE TIME0.004s (1/250)

I would still focus my purchasing power more practically.

CAMERACanon EOS 7D
ISO800
FOCAL LENGTH100.0 mm (157.0 mm in 35mm)
APERTUREf/5
EXPOSURE TIME0.00156s (1/640)

And finally I used my oldest lens still in use...
embarrassingly it also has a very nasty scratch on it.
(- Because I removed the protective filter and forgot to put it back on. Ugh.)

Tamron 18-270mm - I typically use this lens as a walk around lens.

CAMERACanon EOS 7D
Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD
ISO800
FOCAL LENGTH100.0 mm (157.0 mm in 35mm)
APERTUREf/5
EXPOSURE TIME0.00063s (1/1600)

The great thing with this lens is
you hardly ever miss a shot because you aren't busy changing lenses
since it gives you a wide range of focal lengths.
*This lens can only be used with a crop sensor camera - thus the 7d.

CAMERACanon EOS 7D
Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD
ISO800
FOCAL LENGTH35.0 mm (55.0 mm in 35mm)
APERTUREf/5.6
EXPOSURE TIME0.00156s (1/640)

However, as your eye becomes more discerning
you WILL notice a difference in image quality compared to a Canon L lens.

CAMERACanon EOS 7D
Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD
ISO800
FOCAL LENGTH130.0 mm (261.0 mm in 35mm)
APERTUREf/9
EXPOSURE TIME0.00156s (1/640)

So what lens to add to your arsenal?
That's the difficult question we all ask ourselves.

CAMERACanon EOS 7D
Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD
ISO800
FOCAL LENGTH18.0 mm (28.9 mm in 35mm)
APERTUREf/9
EXPOSURE TIME0.01s (1/100)

My most used lens is the Canon 24-105 F4L
And I didn't want to buy it originally because it was F4!
But I LOVE that lens.
It is my go-to lens and almost always on my Canon 5d

CAMERACanon EOS 7D
Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD
ISO800
FOCAL LENGTH23.0 mm (36.1 mm in 35mm)
APERTUREf/11
EXPOSURE TIME0.004s (1/250)

I love the Canon 70-200mm F2.8 too,
but the thing is so darn heavy I hate to use it
because I get tired carrying it.

View in the Ladies' Room - My second favorite image of the day.

ISO800
FOCAL LENGTH55.0 mm (86.4 mm in 35mm)
APERTUREf/11
EXPOSURE TIME0.06667s (1/15)

I DO have some lenses I am selling -
mostly because I really don't use them anymore.
Let me know if you are interested in one and I will get you more info.
One of these days I will get them on Ebay.

Canon 50mm F1.8
Canon 50mm F1.4
Canon 24-70mm F2.8L

What is your favorite lens?

I love the 24-105, it was my fav - amazing image quality without breaking the bank. After switching to Sony, I kept my wide angle because I knew I wouldn't get any $$ for it. I also kept my 100mm macro because it's good glass and works on the Sony with an adapter. My walk-around lens is a Zeiss 16-70 f4. Not quite the reach on the 24-105 but tack sharp.

These are all stunning! I had the luck of cloud cover at Longwood last weekend, really helps with garden photos!
