The Ceramics of Deruta, Italy

While making our way through Umbria 

- which I fell in love with, by the way-

we found ourselves touring a family ceramic shop in Deruta. 

Ceramics is Deruta's claim to fame 

since the middle ages, 

thanks to the local clay found there. 

Today, Deruta continues to provide the world 

with exquisite maiolica. 

As you can see, 

each piece is meticulously hand painted 

with intricate designs.  

I could not even pick a favorite pattern.  

I loved all the rich colors on the white backdrop 

no matter what the design was. 

Of course we had to come home with something, 

but choosing was so difficult. 

I finally selected a piece 

which was carefully packaged in order to make it home safely.

There a many ceramist shops in Deruta, 

we visited Ceramiche Gialletti Giulio 

located at

Beautiful days bring people outside,
and I was outside too.
I took these photos earlier in the spring
and just got around to them now.

The Musician Plays for a Buck 
(or in my case allows a photo for a buck.)

Soooo....
At which point did you know
these were not real people?
 They are all sculptures
at Grounds for Sculpture
in Hamilton, NJ.

And being there plays tricks with your mind.
You never knew when you were
looking at a sculpture or a live person...
unless they happen to move. 

I highly recommend a visit.
And make it soon,
unless they extend this show
a lot of these sculptures will be going elsewhere.

PS. I'm a bit behind in visiting blogs. 
With all the end of year activities for my son, 
who will be graduating in one week, 
I haven't had much time to visit. 
But next week I should be able to 
get back into the swing of things.

The Mural Artist

I had the pleasure of an invitation to join the local chapter of
Art Goes to School
on one of their field trips.

The visit was to Murrie and Chaya Gayman's
Bucks County art studio and home.

The two artists were high school sweethearts
who went on to art school together.


Murrie's philosophy hangs in his studio

Murrie's art and love of wood have evolved into
a unique style of creating mosaic murals.
His medium? Barnwood.

The murals are created of recycled barnwood
and assembled like a giant jigsaw puzzle.
The color, grain, angle of cut of the wood
work together to create the desired pictorial design.

The murals mostly reflect local historic events and locations
as does their antiques-filled 270 year old home
where Murrie has also made much of the furniture and cabinetry.

Hatboro Savings Bank (Jamison)


Chaya shows handmade dolls she collects from France 
where they go each year for Murrie to paint.
